Artist Statement

The Manifestation of Absence —

The Manifestation of Absence.

The Manifestation of Absence

Artists have existed in every age. Rather than merely tracing existing values and institutions, they have sensed the yet-unspoken atmosphere of their time and, at times, made visible what lies beyond it.

Such perception is not something given by another. My practice begins by receiving, as directly as possible, what exists in the world: changes arising in the body, space, presence, dissonance, silence, gravity, and temperature.

For this reason, I have needed an environment of freedom and minimal constraint, where sensation is not predetermined by external interference or established systems of value.

My earlier work followed the processes through which perception and cognition emerge, and through which the world is transformed into something that can be recognized.

Today, however, my attention has moved beyond that point.

Rather than observing the structure of cognition, I seek to grasp and control abstract sensation before it acquires language or contour, and to manifest it as expression.

Tension, calm, gravity, and pulse arising within the body. Presences suspended in space. Things that exist, yet ordinarily recede into the background of consciousness.

I do not depict them.

Through color, flow, repetition, bleeding, density, negative space, matter, weight, and space, I construct the very conditions through which sensation arises.

For me, making is not an act of explaining what already exists.

It is an act of giving a temporary body to something that does not yet possess an image.

What had been absent manifests as sensation.
